How do you handle the day after a holiday when trying to lose weight?

First off, hopefully you enjoyed your holiday and were able to celebrate the correct way- eating the food you wanted in copious amounts with no shame or guilt? If you didn’t and you ate a little more than you should have, that’s okay too. Mashed potatoes, mac n’ cheese, turkey, pasta, rice, pies, and cookies aren’t going to necessarily be the best food choices for your weight loss during Thanksgiving. So what are you to do? The answer is simple- enjoy the time you had and make up for it the next day with more dedicated eating and maybe a workout.

Thanksgiving turkey dinner for all

There is absolutely no reason to feel guilty about having fun and eating good food with people whom you care about and enjoy spending time with. If anything it should help fuel you mentally for the days and weeks ahead and be a ‘refueling’ of sorts. I myself, had about 3,000 more calories than I should have, but I had fun. Am I going to workout the days after? Of course. Am I going to have as many cookies and other carbs as I did on Thanksgiving the preceding days? No, but come Christmas I am going to, and I am going to enjoy it!

family time, the most important time in the park with beautiful scenery

Because as someone who’s had to lose weight for competitions year after year for sport I know the importance of enjoying yourself. There’s nothing worse in my opinion than trying to track your macros when everyone is pouring coquito and handing out chocolate chip cookies. So let the accumulative 4 to 7 days that are the holiday season remain that what they are- 4 to 7 days of guiltless eating followed by getting back on the path of exercise and good food choices without guilt or remorse.

We have to be able to enjoy ourselves after all!
